The race-r that loves to tour - Shark Helmet Review

Shark Race-R Optigon - not only does it sound like a super-powered sea monster/transformer creation, but with its classy black and white high-gloss design featuring flashes of electric orange, it looks the part too.

As full-on as the name and design would suggest, you'll be suprised to hear that this lid isn't actually designed for the track, instead, Shark insist that it is designed for 'touring' use.

The Shark Race-R is one step down from its track-spec brother, the Race-R Pro which features an additional aerodynamic spoiler. The Race-R though is designed for riding with typically lower wind resistance.

We put the Shark Race-R through a number of different road tests including a 150-mile motorway skirmish, a sunday afternoon blast, a weekday commute and even the odd spot of rain.

Overall we were impressed with it's performance, it's thick padded lining provides a snug and comfy fit and keeps the wind noise at a reasonable level (although not the quietest we've tested).

The visor gives a wide field of vision and opens and closes in a smooth seemless motion, it also features Shark's quick removal system for easy cleaning or swapping with a tinted visor.

At cruising speed, the vents work well and keep a cool breeze flowing through the helmet - much appreciated in scorching summer weather. The Shark Race-R is also compatible with Shark's Bluetooth system 'Sharktooth' again suggesting its intended use is for touring.

Other features which you'd probably expect include an anti-fog coating on the visor, an easy fit glasses system and a double D-ring fastener with a magnetic end to keep it out of the way.

If you're looking for a new helmet for use on the road, the Race-R provides a comfortable, practical option that looks good, and with its 5-star SHARP rating you can't go far wrong.

The Shark Race-R Optigon is available in 2 shell sizes and ranges from XS to XL. The RRP is £359.99, for colour options and to find your nearest dealer visit
