Guy Martin chooses TAS Suzuki for 2012

Guy Martin will be joining the Tyco Suzuki team for 2012, meaning that the line-up for the season is now complete with the signing of fans favourite Yorkshire man. After claiming four podium finishes at last year’s Isle of Man TT, Guy Martin will join Conor Cummins for the three biggest road races of the year.

Motorcycle News: Guy Martin signs for TAS Suzuki

Guy Martin returns to the TAS Racing for his second season and explained why he chose to remain on the GSX-R with the new Tyco Suzuki team: “It’s taken a while, but it was always on the cards. I’m happy to be back with the team for a second year and I love the new Tyco Suzuki colours. Great job. The team is good enough, the bikes are good enough and I believe the rider is good enough, so it’s time to go out and bloody win one!”

Team Manager Philip Neill commented “After all the speculation it’s nice to finally be able to officially announce that Guy Martin will continue to race for TAS in 2012, in the new Tyco Suzuki livery.  Guy Martin is not just the most popular rider in the UK these days, but also very popular outside the sport, which is good for motorcycling in general."

TT favourite Cummins joins Tyco Suzuki

The well-known TAS Racing team have just announced the signing of Conor Cummins as their first rider for 2012 road racing assault. Conor will ride the North West 200, Ulster Grand Prix, and his home race the Isle of Man TT for the Tyco sponsored team.

Motorcycle News: Conor Cummins on his new blue and white Tyco bike

Conor has already proved he is hot property and despite his huge accident at the Senior TT in 2010 he is now ready to race and reported to be excited about the next stage of his career.

Conor Cummins said of the signing “This is the ride I’ve been wanting for three or four years. I’m thrilled to have been given the chance to now ride for a factory-supported team in Tyco Suzuki and to be working with the boys at TAS Racing.”

Team Manager, Philip Neill commented, “After months of speculation and negotiations it’s great to finally welcome Conor Cummins to our team for the 2012 international road racing season. I’ll be looking forward to working with Conor both on and off the track this season, as he has the attitude and personality I was really looking for in a rider.”

Team owner Hector Neill concluded: “It’s no secret the Isle of Man TT is the highlight of the racing season for me, and with that in mind, it was important to have a two-rider line-up. It’s also widely known that my number one desire in racing is to again win the Senior TT trophy. So what better way than to win it with a Manxman onboard.”

Conor will be taking in part of a number of other events including British Superstock and some hand-picked road races, to get familiar with the bike, and get a good set-up ready for the TT.

Avoid winter chill with Dainese Gore-Tex jackets

Digging the bike out from under it's frosted cover this weekend made me glad that i was only going for a quick blast, even so a number of layers were snugly fitted under my summer jacket just to keep me sane. It took me back to the days of all-year round commuting on 2-wheels and the importance of investing in a decent jacket to keep the vital organs ticking!

This post contains some of the offerings from one of the best known brands in motorcycle clothing, Dainese. They're not what you'd call cheap, but the prices definitely reflect the quality you'll receive, and who can put a price on keeping warm and sane on a winter ride?!

Motorcycle News: the smart looking Ice Sheet jacket

First up is the chillingly named Ice Sheet GTX jacket, at the lower end of Dainese's weatherproof gore-tex jackets, but still offering a whole host of useful features. The Ice Sheet has been designed for touring and as such is made of elasticated Cordura and comes with a range of adjustable straps to ensure a good fit to every rider. As you'd expect the jacket comes with more than adequate protection and an interior lining, both of which are removable. The focus of the Ice Sheet jacket is on quality and substance and Dainese say that the breathable materials used mean that riders remain comfortable even when the weather turns really bitter. The Ice Sheet has an RRP of £339.99 and should last riders for many seasons if looked after well.

Motorcycle News: The 'Bruce' wins our award for the best named jacket!

Next up, and arguably the best named bit of biking clothing we've come across, is the Bruce GTX jacket. Similarly to the Ice Sheet, the Bruce has been developed for the extremes of touring, but this time the focus is on a lightweight and comfortable design that dries quickly and offers great all-round protection. Numerous air vents, a thermal lining and removable collar give riders the ability to control their body temperature. Despite its simple name, the Bruce has impressive protection to the back, chest and arms, making it a rather technical jacket. The Bruce has an RRP of £407.99.

Motorcycle News: The Tundra is for the most hardcore winter riders!

The last jacket we looked at is the equally epically named Tundra GTX. The Tundra is really for the extremes of winter bike riding, with talk of 'snowdrifts' in Dainese's marketing materials its obvious this is aimed a truly hardcore bikers! Like the other jackets in the range the TUndra features a gore-tex membrane on the outside of the jacket to minimise wind chill and help to stabilise the riders body temperature. Despite being one of the most heavy duty winter jackets on the market, the Tundra is said to allow riders to remain surprisingly flexible and agile thanks to it's lightweight construction. For those intending on heading out regardless of the elements, the Tundra is well worth a look with an RRP of £509.99.

Suzuki GSR750 gets ABS for 2012

Suzuki's popular new street-bike with attitude, the GSR750, has just been updated for 2012 and now comes with optional ABS to keep up with the advances made by its rivals.

Motorcycle News: Suzuki GSR750 now available with ABS

The demonic looking naked bike managed to punch it's way to the top of it's class in it's debut year as it scooped an MCN award in 2011, thanks to flickable handling and fierce power, courtesy of the revised GSX-R750 lump which drives it.

Whilst Suzuki is behind the curve on fitting ABS to it's sports bikes, the manufacturer has had ABS on it's adventure bikes for years, and you can be sure that the system on the GSR has been designed to fit the performance characteristics of the bike.

Suzuki GB general manager, Paul de Lusignan added,"As well as winning the MCN award in 2011 we've received great praise from our customers [on the GSR750] too. ABS is obviously a great safety enhancing feature which we hope will only add to the GSR's desirability in 2012."

The ABS version will be sold alongside the non-ABS version and will have an RRP of £7,349. The bike should be in dealers this month and you can also see it at the Bike Show at London Excel on 2nd-5th Feb.

Dakar Rally 2012 - post stage 10 breather

The world famous 2012 Dakar Rally is currently taking a rare breather on the Chile/Peru border after Stage 10 of the race from Iquique to Arica. The current standings see front runners Cyril Despres and Marc Coma separated by a mere 21 seconds, a narrow margin considering the scope of the race.

Marc Coma in action

The racers only pause for a few hours to catch their breaths and restore their adrenaline reserves before setting off into the whopping 27th new country of the race tomorrow. To add a twist to the gripping action, the bikers will be at their most vulnerable as they split from their mechanics and spare parts vehicles over the next two stages of the Dakar.

It's 37 year old Frenchman Cyril Despres who will have the advantage over 35 year old Spaniard Marc Coma as they head out tomorrow into the mind-bending desert conditions that would put most of us mere mortals off of riding for life! But with Coma closing down the gap by a cool two minutes in the last stage, the pressure is really on for Despres.

“Things are getting very interesting, tomorrow night we have the middle of a marathon stage and also things are very tight at the top. There is 21 seconds between Marc and myself after 11 days of the race so it should be a very exciting finish.” – Cyril Despres

“Tonight will be about looking over the bike with the mechanics, they will try to get it in the best shape they can. They will also tell me if there’s anything on the bike that I should take care of out on the stage. Of course we are very thorough with the bike every night but tonight we will not just double check but triple check!” – Marc Coma

Both riders are remaining open minded about the possible final result of the race, and as everyones knows, anything can happen, especially over the next stages where the riders are cast into the wilderness of the desert without any support close by. The riders will need to dig deep, both physically and mentally, and give their all if they want to come out on top at the end of rounds 11 and 12 in Peru.
