This Merlin Recon Fibreglass review covers the Gravel version with a fibreglass-composite shell, removable peak and goggle-retaining groove. Its magnetic removable liner is a useful maintenance feature, while Merlin’s intermediate-oval fit description makes an in-person fitting particularly relevant.

Peak, goggle routing and removable pads

The Recon is offered in three shell sizes with double-D retention. Try your chosen goggles with the helmet and check their frame clearance and strap location in the retaining groove. The removable peak should be fitted and adjusted only as specified by Merlin.

The cheek pads and top liner use magnetic attachment points and can be removed for washing. Follow the removal and refitting instructions, including the separate emergency-release procedure where applicable. Chin, brow and top vents provide the stated airflow layout, but the specification does not establish actual cooling or noise levels on your rides.

Protection and construction

The listed approval is ECE 22.06. Check the exact helmet label and specification for the version you are buying, particularly if you need it for a track event.

Fit and adjustment

The chin-strap fastening is Double-D. Make sure you are comfortable operating that fastening and adjusting it securely before choosing the helmet.

Comfort and everyday use

The interior is removable for cleaning. Follow the manufacturer’s care instructions and refit the pads in their original positions.
